New Life Elephant Sanctuary

New Life Elephant Sanctuary

Veterinary Care – Retirement – Conservation

The New Life Elephant Sanctuary (NLES) is a groundbreaking elephant welfare initiative that will provide high quality veterinary care and offer sanctuary to Sri Lanka’s working elephants (young and old) that have spent their entire lives shackled in chains, exploited, neglected and abused for commercial profit, religious pageantry, and personal prestige.

At NLES, captive elephants will find much needed refuge from abuse, moving freely among other elephants within a non-stressful, semi-wild environment to help support their recovery from the trauma of captivity. Away from the noise and pavement of cities and festivals, and free from the pain of the ankus, howdah and leg chains, elephants living at NLES will have the opportunity to ‘just be elephants‘ – most for the first time in their lives.
